Maine licenses & registrations
New residents must apply for a Maine driver's license
within 30 days of relocating. The license can be obtained
without taking a road test, but drivers must take a
written test and present a valid out-of-state license
or one that expired within the past year. Applications
can be obtained at some town halls or motor vehicle
offices. The legal driving age is 17, although 15 and
16 year-olds can get a license upon completing a certified
driver education program.
The registration process must be initiated at the city
or town clerk's office. After the required fees and
excise taxes are paid, the completed title and registration
forms are taken to any motor vehicle office. All automobiles
must be inspected annually at a state-approved inspection
station. Licenses for hunting, fishing boats and off-highway
vehicles are required. For more information, contact
the State's Motor Vehicle Division at (207) 289-3556.
